Contemporary Hi-Concept Romance
WGAw Reg. # 1602380
Los Angeles short-order cook Evan Foley stops to watch a production company film an outdoor love scene between the Hollywood actress he idolizes, Annabelle “Anne” Welles, and Hollywood’s reigning bad boy star Vance Pike. As he watches Vance kiss Anne, he whispers to himself, “Why not me?” A booming voice only he hears responds, “Why not you?” Things spin in colors, he passes out and when he comes to, he and Vance have switched bodies.
Vance as Evan is carted away for psychiatric evaluation after trying to force his way onto the set screaming that he’s Vance Pike. Evan as Vance sees no other way than to impersonate the star whose body he now possesses and one dream quickly comes true as he gets to kiss Anne in the scene being filmed. But he quickly finds that she can’t stand the egotistical Vance Pike.
To get closer to Anne, Evan volunteers at her foundation that matches older orphaned children with adopting couples and is drawn to a particularly wounded eight year-old orphaned girl, Amanda Lerner. As Anne watches Evan’s unexpected tenderness bring the little girl out of her protective shell as no one has been able to do, she opens up towards Evan. He thinks to tell her his secret but keeps putting it off. As Amanda blossoms, a couple becomes interested in adopting her, but Amanda resists and reveals that she wants Evan and Anne to be her parents, which might just happen as their relationship deepens.
Vance has been freed from the loony bin and made an agreement with Evan to use his contacts to break back into the industry just in case this cosmic computer glitch never reverses. But he’s finding everything harder than expected and is increasingly annoyed as he watches Evan succeed with Anne where he utterly failed. Finally, he demands of the universe “Why not me?” And…
Evan, back in his own body as a poor nobody, a stranger to Anne and unable to adopt Amanda on his own, struggles to get on with his life. It takes the real Vance only a single date to alienate Anne, and she has the heartbreaking task of telling Amanda the three of them will never be the family she hoped for.
But Amanda’s difficult life has made her need to believe that “sometimes magic happens,” and realizing that Evan is the man she wanted to be her father, she succeeds in making Anne realize the same weird truth. The magic of the love the three of them shared won’t be denied and they all find their dreams coming true.
